God Speaks Identity. Coaching Builds Momentum.

There I was, sitting in church, listening to a staff member speak. She brought up life coaching, and for a moment I perked up—yes, here we go. But then she finished her sentence with something like, “You don’t need to pay a life coach a hundred dollars to feel better about yourself. You need to get into the Bible and read who God says you are.”

I’ll be honest—my first reaction was, “Ouch.” Not because she was wrong about Scripture, but because she clearly didn’t understand what a life coach actually does.

But she also had a point.

If more of us opened our Bibles, we would see that our identity is not fragile, not up for debate, and not defined by culture. We would see that God has already spoken over us—chosen, loved, called, known. And yet, even knowing that, we still wrestle with insecurity, comparison, and the quiet fear that we’re not enough.

So where does coaching fit into that?

Let me be clear: coaching is not a replacement for God, His Word, or the work of the Holy Spirit. It never has been. It never will be.

But coaching can be a companion to spiritual formation. It can help people walk out what God has already said about them. It can help them move from knowing truth in their head to living it with courage in their everyday life.

Here’s how I see it.

1. Coaching is not a substitute for Scripture—it’s a companion to it.

The Bible is where we discover who God is and who we are. Identity begins there. But many people struggle to apply what Scripture says. They know they’re “fearfully and wonderfully made,” but they don’t live like it. They know God has a purpose for them, but they feel stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure where to begin.

Coaching steps into that gap—not to replace God’s voice, but to help people hear it more clearly and walk it out with intention.

A coach doesn’t tell you who you are. A coach helps you live like who God already says you are.

2. Coaching helps people walk out their calling with clarity and courage.

The sermon that morning talked about shrinking back, insecurity, and identity attacks. That’s real. And it’s exactly where coaching often meets people.

Most people don’t need someone to “fix” them. They need someone to help them:

  • see the patterns holding them back
  • name the fears they’ve been avoiding
  • take the next faithful step
  • build confidence rooted in God, not performance

Coaching doesn’t replace God’s calling—it helps people respond to it.

3. Coaching is not about fixing people—it’s about partnering with God’s work in them.

This is where Christian coaching is different from the self‑help world.

I don’t coach people so they can become “better versions of themselves.” I coach people so they can become more aligned with who God already created them to be.

I don’t coach from a place of “you’re broken and need fixing.” I coach from a place of “God is already at work in you—let’s pay attention to that.”

Coaching is not a shortcut around spiritual formation. It’s a tool that supports it.

So yes—get into the Bible. Absolutely. Let Scripture shape your identity. Let God’s voice be the loudest one in your life. Let His Word anchor you when insecurity whispers otherwise.

But also know this:

Sometimes people need help moving from knowing to living. From believing to becoming. From hearing God’s call to actually taking the next step.

That’s where coaching comes in.

Not as a replacement for God. Not as a substitute for Scripture. But as a companion on the journey—a way to walk with clarity, courage, and intention toward the life God is inviting you into.

And if coaching can help someone stop shrinking back, stop doubting their worth, and start living confidently in who God has called them to be—then I’m honored to be part of that work.

Because at the end of the day, it’s not about proving anything. It’s about living from the identity God has already given us.
