Why Fire Matters
Before you explore the blog, I want to share a bit of the story behind it — why fire has always been more than warmth or light for me, and how it became a place of reflection, healing, and clarity.
Why Fire Matters
Since I was a kid, fire has always held a kind of quiet magic for me. I could sit for hours watching the flames move — finding mystery, adventure, peace, and a sense of grounding I didn’t have words for yet. Sometimes I imagined myself wandering through deep forests; other times I slipped into a stillness where the noise of life faded and my thoughts finally had room to breathe.
Years later, during a sabbatical in the Shawnee National Forest near Herod, Illinois, that old connection returned. I stayed in a simple cabin with an endless stack of firewood, and every day — morning and night — a fire burned. It became a companion of sorts. A place to think, pray, reflect, and let the weight I’d been carrying finally loosen its grip.
It’s amazing what a little “fire therapy” can do for a person’s soul. God knew I needed that trip. He knew I needed the warmth, the stillness, and the space to be honest with myself again. Those evenings by the fire helped me sort through my own struggles, questions, and the parts of life I’d been pushing aside.
This blog is an extension of that space. A place for marriage insights, leadership reflections, my weight loss journey, life thoughts, and the occasional rambling. It’s a mix of the real, the reflective, and the restorative — the same things the fire has always offered me.
My hope is simple: that something here gives you permission to slow down, breathe, and find your own moment of “FST.”
